Angkor Wat: Suggestions for 2 weeks Cambodia round trip

As public transport, such as buses and trains, works well and punctually, it is possible to organise a two-week trip around Cambodia well in advance. In a pinch, there are also very reliable taxi drivers who are happy to get a job. Cambodia is a relatively small country, so travel times are not eternally long and you can do things in the places you visit on the day you arrive.

How you spend your 2 weeks in Cambodia depends a little on where you enter the country. Most travellers arrive by air in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, while others travel by road from Thailand, Vietnam or Laos. However you arrive in Cambodia, our suggestions for a 2-week itinerary can be combined in any way and serve as a general overview of what you should see during your 14 days in Cambodia.

Our recommendations for 2 weeks in Cambodia

Try to organise as much as possible in advance. For an individual trip to Cambodia of only 2 weeks, we recommend booking hotels and some transport in advance. For local tuk-tuk excursions and overland taxi rides, we have prepared a list of » Drivers, Guides and Tour Guides in Cambodia (German). You can contact the drivers and guides in advance. The drivers and guides on the list have either travelled with us or have been recommended by our readers. Tickets for the bus trips can be purchased at Camboticket.com. If you’re looking for accommodation, check out our hotel recommendations in each city.

Do I need a visa for the 2 weeks in Cambodia?

Whether you are planning a 2 or a 4 week round trip through Cambodia, you will need a visa in any case. You have the choice between a visa from the embassy (inconvenient), an eVisa (safe) or a Visa on Arrival (sometimes a long wait at the counter). We recommend you get the eVisa in advance to be on the safe side and avoid long queues when you arrive at the airport. The eVisa for tourists costs US$36. With the eVisa you can stay in Cambodia for 30 days. So nothing stands in the way of your 2-week round trip through Cambodia.

How much does a 2 week Cambodia round trip cost?

If we don’t include the price of the flight, then you can easily get by with 50 to 60 euros per day for a normal standard. Mind you, this budget doesn’t include top hotels and long taxi rides. If you’re willing to spend a hundred euros a day, you can jump in the pool in the evening and don’t have to take rickety buses. All in all, you can get by with 900 to 1,500 euros for your 2 week Cambodia round trip. That also includes an extra Angkor beer.

You can easily find cheap flights worldwide with the search engine from » Booking*.

Map with itinerary for 2 weeks Cambodia

On the map we have marked the places of interest that you can visit during the 2 week Cambodia round trip. The map is for orientation and shows an alternative for the last four days at the end of the trip. Our 2 weeks Cambodia itinerary map is of course just a suggestion and can be combined in any way you like.

Our summary of 2 weeks in Cambodia

We have been travelling to Cambodia continuously for over 20 years, partly to revisit friends, to keep our online travel guide for Cambodia up to date and of course to pursue our job as photographers/travel journalists. So it is almost logical that for us personally a round trip in 2 weeks through Cambodia is clearly too little, because the country really has a lot more to offer. But often it is not possible to get the necessary holiday days for a tourist trip to stay longer than 2 weeks in a country. Or you might want to combine your trip with another country in Southeast Asia, e.g. spend a beach holiday in Thailand. Whatever the case, you will experience a lot during a 2-week round trip through Cambodia and bring home thousands of impressions of the land of the Khmer. The only important thing is that you plan your trip well in advance.

Itinerary from Siem Reap: 2 weeks in Cambodia

As most people arrive in Siem Reap first and fly back to Bangkok from Phnom Penh, we start our 2 week Cambodia round trip tips in Siem Reap or Angkor. The absolute highlight of Cambodia is the Khmer temple complex of Angkor, which of course everyone wants to see at the beginning of their trip to Cambodia. No wonder! Even if you only have two weeks to visit Cambodia, spend at least two full days in Angkor for an intensive temple and landscape tour.

Day 1 – 4: Siem Reap and Angkor

If you arrive in Siem Reap by early afternoon, you can find a tuk-tuk or taxi and buy your Angkor Pass (ticket) at the Angkor ticket office at 4.30pm. You can also buy your ticket online at Angkor Enterprise. From 4.30pm you can use the ticket to visit the temple complex and enjoy the sunset atmosphere at Angkor Wat. This will give you a taste of what to expect in Siem Reap and Angkor over the next few days. This will be the first highlight of your 2-week Cambodia tour. Promised!

Day 4-7: Battambang and Bamboo Train

Most travellers come to Battambang to ride the legendary Bamboo Train through the jungle. But there is so much more to see in Battambang that you should allow at least two full days in your 2 week Cambodia itinerary. In addition to the classic route (see day 5), we recommend a visit to Phnom Sampov (also called Phnom Sampeau). A great ending on the mountain: watching the bats as the huge swarm leaves their cave at dusk to forage for food.

Day 7 -9: Phnom Penh

We recommend that you spend at least two full days in Phnom Penh to see all the sights at your leisure. However, if you are staying in Cambodia for 2 weeks, a full day is enough to visit the main attractions such as the Royal Palace, Tuol Sleng Prison (S 21) and the Killing Fields, which are just outside the city centre, with a driver. If you are flying back from Phnom Penh to your home country or to Bangkok, you will return to the capital at the end of your two-week Cambodia tour.

Day 9 – 11: Kampot

Kampot is a place not to be missed during your two weeks in Cambodia. It’s a great place to relax and take trips to the sights in the area. Kampot is famous for its pepper plantations, where the famous Kampot pepper is harvested. By the way: The pepper makes a delicious souvenir from your 2-week Cambodia tour.

Day 11 – 14: Kep

If you don’t necessarily want to go to the beach in Sihanoukville (see alternative below) or further to Koh Rong Island, you can also jump into the water in Kep at the end of your 2 week Cambodia round trip. If you get bored at the beach, there are still sights to see, such as the Kep National Park, the crab market, the salt fields and the abandoned villas of Modern Khmer architecture. A great place to end your 2 weeks in Cambodia.

Alternative Day 11 – 14: Sihanoukville

And here is the alternative to Kep: If you would prefer to spend the last few days of your two-week Cambodia round trip just on the beach, then the beaches around Sihanoukville would be quite nice. The town itself is not recommended. It has mutated into a Chinese seaside resort with a casino atmosphere. Unless you are a gambler.

Our hotel tip near the beach: Somewhat older, but nicely renovated in Khmer style is the » Independence Hotel Resort & Spa* and a good choice for the end of your 2 week Cambodia tour.

There is also the possibility to go further to Koh Rong Island by boat, but we do not recommend this for 2 weeks in Cambodia. In case of a breakdown of the transfer boat or bad weather, you may not be able to leave Koh Rong Island and thus miss your flight in Phnom Penh. If you stay on the mainland, you can take a taxi from anywhere and go straight to the airport in four hours.

If you’re visiting Koh Rong Island, stay on the idyllic Sok San Beach in the reasonably priced » Soksan Natura Beach* or in the exclusive » Sok San Beach Resort*. Both are directly on the beach and have an absolute dream location.

Day 11-14 in Sihanoukville: Overview

  • Tag 11: Arriving in Sihanoukville, swimming in the sea
  • Tag 12: Visit Kbal Chhay Waterfall, Ream National Park
  • Tag 13: Bathing, hanging out, chilling
